In the first round of the Club World Cup group stage, Real Madrid and Riyadh Crescent tied 1-1, and Alonso failed to get a good start in his debut.

Alonso became the fourth head coach to win a draw in Real Madrid's debut in the past 33 years, with the previous three being Capello in 1996 (1-1), Mourinho in 2010 (0-0) and Benitez in 2015 (0-0).
