Magic Reporter: NBA Cup is a gimmick The importance of its championship depends on how the team uses it

Today, Magic reporter Philip Rossman-Reich wrote an article about his views on the NBA Cup.

Philip Rossman-Reich wrote: "Everyone's view of the NBA Cup may vary.

" The NBA Cup is a gimmick adopted by the league to raise attention early in the season and try to create some early intense atmosphere.

"Some teams really embraced the philosophy of this tournament. Others don't take it seriously.

"The first two champions - the Los Angeles Lakers and the Milwaukee Bucks - failed to do much for the rest of the season. It doesn't predict future success—even though two-year runner-up Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder both went far in the playoffs during a breakthrough season.

"Even for someone who supports the NBA Cup philosophy (like me) and enjoys this early season tournament (and all its complexity), this trophy is not the ultimate goal. Its importance really depends on how the team leverages it."
